This hike is a challenging one, mainly due to the high altitude, marshy ground and wet and foggy conditions. Don’t let that put you off though; the Ocetá Páramo is absolutely worth experiencing – especially if you have any interest in high altitude flora. The bizarre landscape is certainly picturesque and unforgettable, and there ate some ancient Muisca carvings here too. There truly are few places in the word quite like it. – Daniel

If you’re on a budget and don’t want to hire a guide from either Mongui or your guesthouse in Sogamoso, it is possible to explore this area without one. Don’t go too deep though, otherwise you’ll be certain to get lost, especially with how quickly the fog rolls in.
Expect drizzly and marshy conditions, so boots are almost mandatory. Bring sufficient snacks and weatherproof gear and you’ll be fine.
You may feel some effects of altitude sickness such as nausea or headaches. Just take it easy as you go, stay well hydrated and fed, and don’t forget to take photos of this amazing landscape!
