                With your back to , head right until you quickly come to a roundabout and take a right there. Stick on this road for about 30km until you get to Karugutu and then take a right turn onto a dirt path into the Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve. Stick to this main road (otherwise you will have to pay a park entry fee) for another 50km until you reach Ntoroko and Lake Albert. You might want to drive slowly along that Karugutu-Ntoroko track as it’s quite possible to do some OK game viewing here and the scenery is quite pretty on a clear day.
                 
                After enjoying the game viewing and the frankly dishevelled Ntoroko village, you should return the way you came for another run of game viewing. If you’re feeling peckish, look out for the rolex stands in Karugutu, otherwise take a left at the main junction and head towards Bundibugyo. There is a shortcut to Sempaya you can risk (but we wouldn’t advise it unless for an exhilarating detour!) about 10km along the road onto the ‘Itojo Old Road’, but otherwise you should stick along this road skirting the lower Rwenzoris.
                 
                After about another 30km you should pass Sempaya and be driving alongside the Semliki National Park and then shortly after Bundibugyo. You can continue along this road all the way to the Congo border, returning the way you came when you feel quite satisfied.

                If you’ve got your own wheels (preferably a 4×4) and a morning or afternoon to space, this drive out of towards the Congolese border is well worth it to really get a feel for what’s going on in the surrounding countryside. And not only are there impressive views all along the way, but you’ll be able to do a small spot of safariing too. Just don’t risk the ‘Old Itojo Road’, or if you do be well prepared!

                Top Tips

                There is no charge to drive along the main road through the Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve or beside the Semliki National Park, and although game viewing here is nothing spectacular, it is certainly worth your time if you’re on a bit of a budget.
                Don’t plan on spending long at Ntoroko village on Lake Albert. We found this to be a very ramshackle and polluted place devoid of any real facilities.
                There is a shortcut you can take about 10km beyond Karugutu that is recommended by guidebooks. It involves turning off onto the ‘Itojo Old Road’ and cutting through to Sempaya. As a word of warning, we tried this route and got half way (7km) before getting blocked by a felled tree. This ‘road’ was more of a wide and wet hiking track with occasional steep drops and barely enough space to turn around. Needless to say, it is probably quite easy to get stuck trying out this scenic but very wild ‘shortcut’.

                        This isn’t the cheapest place in town at all, which probably explains why it’s so popular with mzungus!
                        The quality of the food here is pretty good, though its location – on a pretty hectic junction – leaves something to be desired.
                        If you’re missing pizza, the pizzas here are pretty good and fall somewhere between a standard and a personal in size. Just don’t expect gorgonzola to be available if you get excited at the four-cheese pizza.

                                With your back to , head left along the main road for 5 to 10 minutes until you come to Mountains of the Moon Hotel, at which point you need to take the left turning and follow that road for about 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you will come to a junction with a right turning. You will know you’re at the correct junction because the right turning will change from tarmac to dirt and there will be signs pointing down that road to ‘Kahumuza Primary & Nursery School’ and ‘Kyakaigo Christian Church’. Very quickly on this road you will come to a small road that continues straight on and a major turning that swings left. Take the main road heading left and stick on this road for about an hour and a half.
                                 
                                You will get progressively more rural as you walk along this road. The people are very friendly and the scenery very pleasant, and you are never very far away from a village or a boda boda. Towards the end of the hour and a half you will go through Harugongo Market – which may look like a series of empty wooden shacks if the Monday market is not on. Continue down this road until it terminates at a T-junction.
                                 
                                At the T-junction, take the right turning and walk for another half an hour until you see a sign pointing left to Raphael Catholic Church. Take this turning and walk down it for another good half an hour. You will see a few paths coming off this road (one pointing to the aforementioned church), but stick to the main path. You will now be very much in rural !
                                 
                                After about half an hour (and now nearly 3 hours in), you should be able to see a radio tower on the top of the hill in front of you. Very close to this tower, you will need to take a left fork in the road up to the radio tower itself. Walk behind and around the radio tower and you will finally be rewarded (on a clear day) with views of the Semliki valley 1,000m below and Lake Albert in the distance. You have made it to the ! To return, head back the way you came. Or you can try to pick up a boda-boda for between UGX5,000 - 8,000.

                                This is a fairly long (and very pleasant) walk with few services along the way, so do bring plenty of water and general supplies. Also, be prepared to have to walk back for at least 6km to Harugongo Market before you can guarantee yourself a boda-boda should you not be prepared for a 6-hour round trip.
                                Of course, if you’d rather not walk but would still like to reach the , a boda-boda shouldn’t set you back any more than about UGX8,000 one way. Perhaps UGX15,000 return.
                                At the viewpoint, look out for the very friendly Paul Rwabwogo (256) 0772 485 602. He owns (and can often be found on) the land here and has ambitious plans to build a campsite, cottages and a restaurant – as well as a trail heading down to some caves and game viewing below. For the immediate future, he promises that cold drinks (thanks to a solar-powered fridge) will be available from early 2017. He can also help you arrange transport back to should you be too tired to walk!

                                        You could either boda-boda here from for about UGX8,000, or walk here in about 3 hours on the .
                                        This viewpoint is the end of the road before you drop down 1,000m to the Semliki Valley and Lake Albert. To know you’re in the right place, look out for the radio tower at the top of the hill, or check out for concise directions.
                                        At the viewpoint, look out for the very friendly Paul Rwabwogo (256) 0772 485 602. He owns (and can often be found on) the land here and has ambitious plans to build a campsite, cottages and a restaurant – as well as a trail heading down to some caves and game viewing below. For the immediate future, he promises that cold drinks (thanks to a solar-powered fridge) will be available from early 2017. He can also help you arrange transport back to should you be too tired to walk!

                                                This is a good place to come for a view of , and it’s not too far out of town (15 minutes by foot).
                                                There are plans to develop this hill for tourism, with Toro Palace being its central feature. Currently, it’s just a viewpoint.

                                                        The entrance to the site is unsignposted. Look for a dirt track coming off the Kasese highway to the right (coming from ) just before a small white and green mosque on your left. Follow this dirt track for about 100 metres until you come to a set of graves and a set of three buildings, one of which is thatched.
                                                        Although you can walk here in just over an hour from , the road is quite busy with speeding buses and trucks and isn’t particularly pleasant. A boda-boda would probably cost you no more than UGX10,000 for the round trip (with waiting time).
                                                        The entry price for this is reportedly UGX10,000 but there was no one around when we visited and so we let ourselves in to the small thatched building containing the ‘tombs’. If it did cost us UGX10,000 each, we would have most certainly been disappointed.
