Top Descriptions

Somewhere between 700 and 1,000 years old, the now-ruined and free-to-enter Gori Fortress sits proudly in the centre of offering excellent views of the town and surrounding region below. The walls remain quite intact for the most part (even after the big earthquake of 1920), and there is some interesting statuary to be found at the east entrance, but otherwise there’s little here to keep the casual tourist for more than a quick look. Nevertheless, in a country littered with ruined fortresses, this one stands out more than most.

If you’ve written a description for Gori Fortress you’d like to share with the community, send it to [email protected] and we’ll post it right here in the directory.

Top Tips

The views from the top of the fort are quite impressive, especially on a clear day when the High Caucasus can be seen quite clearly to the north. You’ll have to walk for about 10 minutes uphill to appreciate them though, as it’s not possible to drive to this fort.
If you’re visiting here in the winter, bring a good windbreaker as it can get quite fierce up here and quite chilly. This site is quite exposed to the sun too.
Watch out for the dogs that hang out around here. They may be quite friendly and willing to guide you up through the ruins, but they can also become quite excitable too.
Consider visiting the while you’re here as it’s only a ten minute walk away from this site.
