Top Descriptions

What this game drive lacks in animal variety it makes up for with its density of elephants. There are very few things in this world that are as wonderfully moving as witnessing the herds of elephants that inhabit Amboseli. Sat in the safari vehicle one feels small and unimportant yet overwhelmingly honoured. – Sarah

Top Tips

Expect to encounter large herds of elephant at Amboseli National Park. These animals can often be found bathing in the swamps around Lake Amboseli, but your best bet at photographing them with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop is much closer to .
The hyena seem to like the drainage tunnels beneath the trails, so do keep an eye out for them there.
Consider stopping at the along your route, especially for a picnic lunch.

Top Tips

If you’re on the hunt for black and white rhinos, the grassy areas right beside the lake seem to be likely spots for good sightings. & if you do see them from afar, be patient and they might very well move nearer – though do be careful as they have been known to attack cars (especially the black species) ;).
Stop by at the for excellent views of the lake and of Nakuru town. This would also make for an excellent picnic spot.
Although there are reportedly tree-climbing lions in the park, don’t come here with high hopes of seeing them. The vegetation can be quite dense, and there were no rumblings of sightings at all when we were there.

Top Descriptions

This game drive may well be one of the most satisfying in Kenya (and indeed the world). There are a wide variety of animals to be encountered when spending a full day in the reserve, and ample opportunities to get up close to some of the big 5. Though luck plays a significant role, knowing that the animals are not tracked adds an element of authenticity and heightened adrenaline. – Sarah

Top Tips

This is an absolutely fantastic game drive. It’s a long and tiring day though, so do bring plenty of snacks, water and sun cream.
Be careful when going to the toilet in the wild. Ladies might want to take a friend to check behind the bushes with them before going – and to stand on lookout.
Should any of your drivers decide to annoy a cheetah out of a bush or aggravate a lion into standing up, don’t be shy to speak out against this type of harassing behaviour.

Top Descriptions

For East Africa, this is a very good value and very well organised tour. You’ll certainly have ample opportunity to see the big five in the wild, and if you’re lucky you might even see a kill or two. Just be prepared to have to do a good bit of travelling between the national parks and reserves. – Daniel

Top Tips

Accommodation along the tour is in , and . All campsites are more than adequate for how wild these areas are, but don’t come expecting luxury.
Although long journeys are kindly broken up with lunch and toilet stops, be forewarned that the toilets themselves are almost always conveniently placed inside large souvenir shops.
As Dennis Solomon at run tours like this every day, it’s very possible that you might have sections of this trip to yourself. All the same, you could find every seat on your minivan is full – especially in the . Hope for a not-too-busy-but-friendly minivan full.

Top Descriptions

This is a rare opportunity to cycle on a game drive instead of drive or be driven (although you can choose to drive if you want to). As there are no predators dangerous enough to humans in this national park, you’ll have free roam to cycle along the dusty main roads right through its impressive rocky heart. Herds of zebra, antelope and warthog are easy spots among the plains and cliffs, but even small herds of giraffes are found here hiding among the bushes. Unfortunately though, it’s not all good news and experiences at Hell’s Gate National Park. In fact, it might be a good idea to visit this area before the construction work really takes over.

Top Tips

Although you can expect to see a fair variety and density of wildlife on such a short stretch of road, the experience at would certainly be lessened in a traditional safari vehicle – try walking or rent a bike from the or !
Watch out for rogue buffalo (especially herds of them) as they don’t see too well ;).
If you happen to miss the giraffes along this route, we were advised to head 2 or 3 kilometres up the gorge side of the Buffalo Circuit (any further with bikes would be “tricky”). Indeed, we saw one along this route and then three at the top where the circuit is intersected by a tarmac road.
