Top Descriptions

This is one of the few (perhaps only?) museums that pay homage to one of the world’s most famous leaders, Joseph Stalin. The exhibits are a predominately photographic display showing Stalin’s life from his younger years until his death. A few other pieces are also included that reportedly either belonged to the man or were gifted to him, such as furniture, his sword, carpets and chinaware. Perhaps the most notable item is one of his death masks, which is eerily lit up as the centre piece of the final room and surrounded by red drapes.

If you’ve written a description for Joseph Stalin Museum (Gori) you’d like to share with the community, send it to [email protected] and we’ll post it right here in the directory.

Top Tips

The building that houses the exhibits is quite grand, and is perhaps worth a visit if you are in – even if you have no interest in Stalin.
There are English speaking staff on hand should you have any questions or wish to request a guide (the exhbits often lack translations).
The souvenir shop has a wide collection of Stalin trinkets that you are unlikely to find outside of this region.
If you are looking for somewhere comfortable to grab a bite or drink, nearby is a more than reasonable option (with some western dishes too).

Top Descriptions

This is a short and straightforward enough bus (marshrutka) journey from in to . The entire trip shouldn’t take more than an hour or cost more than GEL3, and there’s some impressive views of the High Caucasus to the north on the way – on a clear day.

Top Tips

It can be a little difficult to find the marshrutka for at , and many of the shared taxi drivers will tell you that they don’t exist. But they do. Take the stairs that head out and under and walk for 10 minutes straight and to the left. You’ll briefly leave the marshrutka, walking past a long road of shared taxis for places such as , but if you keep going you’ll approach the main road again and some of the last marshrutka here are for where you want to go.
Every passenger gets a seat, so you shouldn’t need to worry about being too cramped in here. Try to get to the station early enough so that you can choose one of the better seats though – no one wants to sit on the fold out chairs in the middle if it can be helped.
If you have a lot of luggage, it might be a good idea to pay the extra GEL3 for an additional seat.
The marshrutky that plow this route tend to be a little larger and busier, so expect more passengers and for every seat to be taken.

Gori bus station is a little more organised than your average marshrutka waiting area in . Set on the western edge of downtown right next to a building with strikingly modern architecture, situated directly below and surrounded by small fruit stalls and bric-a-brac shops, this is a more spacious than usual passenger loading area – although this station is no easier to navigate for those without the ability to decode Russian or Georgian.

Top Tips

Marshrutka drivers at seem to prefer that you pay them for a ticket (billet) before getting on the bus. You might want to do so before boarding, either by paying the driver, or by finding the nearest small ticket kiosk.

Top Descriptions

Somewhere between 700 and 1,000 years old, the now-ruined and free-to-enter Gori Fortress sits proudly in the centre of offering excellent views of the town and surrounding region below. The walls remain quite intact for the most part (even after the big earthquake of 1920), and there is some interesting statuary to be found at the east entrance, but otherwise there’s little here to keep the casual tourist for more than a quick look. Nevertheless, in a country littered with ruined fortresses, this one stands out more than most.

Top Tips

The views from the top of the fort are quite impressive, especially on a clear day when the High Caucasus can be seen quite clearly to the north. You’ll have to walk for about 10 minutes uphill to appreciate them though, as it’s not possible to drive to this fort.
If you’re visiting here in the winter, bring a good windbreaker as it can get quite fierce up here and quite chilly. This site is quite exposed to the sun too.
Watch out for the dogs that hang out around here. They may be quite friendly and willing to guide you up through the ruins, but they can also become quite excitable too.
Consider visiting the while you’re here as it’s only a ten minute walk away from this site.

Top Descriptions

Reportedly over 3,000 years old, Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-hewn cave city set beside the banks of the Mtkvari River. Picturesquely surrounded by arid (and sometimes snowy) mountains, and less than 15km from the city of , this ancient pagan site is impressive and well worth the hour or so that it takes to fully explore it. Expect to find a number of caves here, some impressive viewpoints, and a new church built on the site of an old pagan one.

Top Tips

It is possible to visit here by marshrutka from , although the round trip with an hour of waiting time is only GEL20 - 30 and so may be worthwhile if you’re not travelling alone.
If you visit here in winter, wrap up warm. This site is quite exposed to both the sun and wind, and that wind can get really quite strong. Also bring some sturdy shoes as you’ll need to do a good bit of clambering over the rocks and caves.
Children under 6 may be admitted for free. Dogs, however, and smoking, are not allowed.
Audio guides are available (use your ID as a deposit) for GEL10.
