Top Descriptions

Carved out of Erusheti Mountain and overlooking the Kura River, Vardzia is a 12th century cave monastery that has stood the test of time. Up to 19-storeys of caves are built into the cliff face, some of which have maintained interesting features for the casual visitor such as wine cellars and wall paintings. The centrepiece is the Church of the Dormition, which is still used as a place of worship by locals today. Most of the other caves are unfortunately now rather bare though.

If you’ve written a description for Vardzia Cave Monastery you’d like to share with the community, send it to [email protected] and we’ll post it right here in the directory.

Top Tips

It’s not too easy to reach this site on public transport, so consider visiting here on the . There are some marshrutkas daily from however, should you be on a tight budget.
You might want to bring a torch for some of the caves as these can be quite dark. Wear some decent footwear too, and expect to have to navigate some smallish tunnels – and watch your head.
Audio guides are available (use your ID as a deposit), though these can be a little overly detailed for what is essentially an empty cave. There are a couple of caves with decent wall paintings, but these are locked, and unfortunately only the guides for GEL25 have the keys.
If you visit in the off season (winter), don’t expect the restaurant or souvenir shop to be open. There is not really any other food in the area either.

First built in the 9th century, Rabati Castle stands proudly on a hill in the middle of city. A somewhat odd mix of old and new (and of Christianity and Islam) this recently renovated site makes for a leisurely way to spend an hour or so.
