This entrance gate to is not only ancient but also well preserved. Though some of the paint work is more recent, the carvings and pillars are reportedly very old. The protruding lotus carvings from the roof are particularly extravagant (for a gate), while the two-deep line of ornamental animals implies a place of importance.

Since then, numerous rooms, halls and courtyards have been added, destroyed, and then restored. Dacheng Hall is considered by some as the most impressive architectural feature on offer here. With 28 pillars, carved from single pieces of stone, and intrinsically decorated, it is easy to appreciate this as one of finer sites.

Not far from , the birthplace of Confucius, Tai’an is a fairly unassuming city in central Shandong province. In fact, if it weren’t for one attraction in particular, most tourists would probably just pass on through, either north to , south to or east to . But that attraction – – is one of the holiest of such mountains in . It is a place of continual pilgrimage, and a worthy attraction for any tourist. Otherwise, expect a mid-level city that’s a little more attractive than most thanks to its mountainous backdrop, but just as difficult to get about if you don’t speak the language.
